12 Indians serving in the Russian Army have been killed during the Russia-Ukraine war. The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed this. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said that a total of 126 Indians are known to have joined the Russian Army. Of these, 96 people have returned to India after completing their service, while 12 have died.

The Ministry of External Affairs has confirmed that 18 Indians are still serving in the Russian Army, out of which 16 Indians are missing and efforts are on to trace them. Randhir Jaiswal said, ‘We are in touch with the Russian authorities to ascertain the whereabouts of the missing Indian citizens and for the early release and repatriation of the survivors.’

‘Indian Embassy in talks with Russian officials’

The Ministry of External Affairs has arrested Binil T.B., an Indian citizen from Thrissur district of Kerala. The recent death of has been confirmed. Randhir Jaiswal described Binil’s death, which was first reported by a relative on Monday, as ‘unfortunate’. Efforts are on to bring Binil’s body back to India. The Indian Embassy in Moscow is in talks with Russian officials.

Apart from this, another resident of Kerala who was injured in Russia is currently undergoing treatment in a hospital in Moscow. Jaiswal said, ‘The embassy is in touch with him and the Russian authorities regarding his health and we are hopeful that he will return after his treatment.’

PM Modi raised the issue during his visit to Russia

Officials had confirmed the deaths of nine Indians in the Russian army last year, with Binil now the 10th Indian. Following Binil’s death, India has intensified its efforts to secure the release of Indians still serving in the Russian army. Prime Minister Narendra Modi had raised the issue of early release of Indian citizens during his talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow in July last year.
