151 complaints of sexual exploitation registered since 2017

Let us tell you, in the year 2017, Gender Sensitization Committee Against Sexual Harassment (GSCASH) was abolished in JNU and Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) was formed in its place. Students and teachers have continuously protested against this decision. He says that ICC lacks transparency and autonomy and it works under the influence of the administration.

A maximum of 63 complaints were registered in the year 2018-19. Earlier in 2016, 38 complaints were registered under GSCASH. During the Covid-19 pandemic, only 6 cases were reported in 2019-21, while 30 complaints each were registered in 2022-23 and 2023-24.

In April, a student staged an indefinite strike for 12 days against the administration’s inaction in the case of sexual exploitation. For this the university imposed a fine on the student and her supporters.

47 girl students lodged complaints during freshers party

During the freshers’ party in October, 47 girl students lodged a complaint of sexual harassment and violence. Similarly, in April, a student accused the professor of sexual harassment and asked her to leave the campus. These incidents have raised questions on the functioning of ICC and have led to widespread protests among students.
