All countries will meet again next year

All countries have agreed to meet again next year to continue the talks. It was the fifth meeting of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC), which is working to draft a legally binding treaty on plastic pollution by 2022.

The week-long talks revealed deep differences between countries seeking to curb plastic production and harmful chemicals and those focusing solely on managing plastic waste.

Negotiators from about 200 countries participated in the meeting. They held closed-door discussions on Saturday to iron out differences on key issues, but the draft released on Sunday left most concerns unresolved.

INC President Luis Vayas Valdivieso told delegates, ‘We must build on the progress we have made. To conclude our talks, a consensus has been reached to resume the current session at a later date.
