A 55 -year -old criminal, who is serving a life imprisonment in the 2002 Godhra train case, has been arrested in a case of theft in Pune district of Maharashtra. He escaped after the parole period ended.
Police said that Pune Rural Police arrested Salim Zarda on 22 January. Salim Zarda was among the 31 people who were sentenced to life imprisonment in the Godhra train case. Zarda came out of a prison in Gujarat on a seven -day parole on 17 September 2024 and later escaped.
Inspector Dinesh Taade of Aliphata police station said, “On January 22, we arrested Salim Zarda and his gang members in a theft case.” These people used to carry out theft incidents in rural areas of Pune. During the investigation, his relationship with the Godhra train scandal was revealed.
“Three cases of theft by Zarda were reported during the investigation. The criminal used to come to Pune district from Godhra in Gujarat and carried out the theft incidents,” the police officer said.
Zarda and others were convicted on 27 February 2002 for setting fire to the S-6 coach of Sabarmati Express in Godhra, killing 59 people.
