AM/NS India eyes on green steel – AMNS India Eyes on Green Steel

ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India) plans to make 70 percent of its production ‘Green’ (environmentally friendly) by FY 27, which is in line with the central government starting the green steel taxonomy. The Center introduced taxonomy for green steel last December, which is expected to be started in FY 27. This step is expected to promote deacation in the country’s steel industry and promote green steel demand in India and abroad.

Green steel is classified based on the emission intensity of the steel plant, where it is produced. For eligibility as ‘green’, the intensity of carbon emissions should be lower than 2.2T carbon dioxide/TCS. Steel with emission intensity above this range will not get a green rating, while the three-level system of steel below it will be rated on three-stars, four-stars or five-stars green steel.

India’s new Green Steel Taxonomi is expected to be implemented in FY 27, AM/NS has its ability to lead the Indian Green Steel Industry. In FY 23, the company achieved the intensity of 2.17 T Carbon Dioxide/TCS, 14 percent less than the national average. Ranjan Dhar, director and vice -president of AM/NS India (sales and marketing), said that the company has managed to reduce its carbon emission intensity by more than 35 percent since 2015.
