Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan has always been known for his dedication to cinema, but in a candid interview at the Red Sea Film Festival in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, the actor revealed that he had once considered stepping away from films altogether. speaking to The Hollywood Reporter IndiaAamir shared that the COVID-19 pandemic played a pivotal role in his decision to reevaluate his priorities.
Aamir Khan speaks on finding “middle ground” after almost quitting acting: “I work until six and after that, I’m with the family”
“Well, I think it was (the) COVID (pandemic),” he said, laughing. “I was just sitting home alone, suddenly, after 30 years of working. It made me realize I had perhaps not spent enough time with my family or people I’m close to. So I thought Laal Singh Chaddha (2022) would be my last film.”
Prioritizing Family Over Films
Aamir confessed that his life had revolved around his work for decades, leaving little room for personal connections. “I wanted to be with my kids, my mum, and my siblings — the people whom I love,” he said. While the decision to retire felt right at the time, he chose not to make any public announcement to avoid creating a media frenzy before the release of Laal Singh Chaddha,
“I told my family, but it was too big of a public statement to make. In any case, people don’t expect my films to come out every year…after Laal Singh Chaddhathey would expect the next project two or three years later only,” he explained.
Finding a Middle Ground
After spending months reconnecting with his loved ones, Aamir humorously admitted that his family found his constant presence overwhelming. “They said, ‘We’ve had enough of you, so please get back to films — we can’t handle so much of you!’”
His children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan, played a crucial role in helping him strike a balance. “They said to me, ‘You’re such an extremist; when you were doing films, you only wanted to do that, and now, you only wanted to be with your family. There is a middle ground, papa,’” Aamir recalled.
Taking their advice to heart, Aamir restructured his routine to balance his professional and personal life. “I work until six and after that, I’m with the family,” he shared, adding that this system has been working well for him.
A Busy New Chapter
Although he initially contemplated retirement, Aamir is now busier than ever. “In fact, I’ve never done so much work! I’m producing four to five films right now. It’s not possible every day, but largely, I’m able to give time to both my family and to myself,” he concluded with a smile.
