Acting on a memorandum regarding the Banke Bihari temple in Sambhal, the district administration on Tuesday reached the spot to determine the age of the structure and verify the facts related to the symbols of deities found on the walls.

Earlier, Shri Kartik Mahadev Temple (Bhasma Shankar Temple) was reopened on December 13. Officials had said that they noticed the covered structure during an anti-encroachment operation. An idol of Lord Hanuman and a ‘Shivalinga’ were found in the temple.

The temple is in ruins

Speaking to reporters, Chandausi Tehsildar Dhirendra Singh said that on Tehsil Day (December 21), a complaint was submitted to the District Magistrate regarding the Banke Bihari temple, which is in ruins. He said that symbols related to Lord Shiva have been found in the temple. Apart from this, statues of Lord Ram and Goddess Sita have also been carved on the walls.

The Tehsildar said that the age of the temple will be determined and the circumstances under which these ruins occurred will also be investigated. Singh said that Banke Bihari temple is spread over 1.137 hectares. He said that if encroachment is found, it will also be removed immediately.

Kaushal Kishore, a local resident who complained to District Magistrate Rajendra Pensia, said that he had informed the officer about the existence of an old temple in Chandausi area of ​​Sambhal district which is now in ruins. He said that Banke Bihari Temple was established in 1870. The 150 year old temple is located in Laxman Ganj area.

Kishore said that earlier there was a large Hindu population here but after the murder of the temple priest, the Hindus left from here. He said that in May 2010, Lord Shiva and other idols in the temple were vandalized by anti-social elements and the entire temple was reduced to ruins.
