A major accident has occurred in Dima Hasao district of Assam. Here, 9 laborers are trapped after water entered the 300 feet deep coal mine. This illegal mine is located in Umrangso town near the border of Meghalaya. A large-scale rescue operation has been launched to save the workers. But it is being told that due to the mine being like a ‘rat hole’, a lot of effort is being required in the rescue work.
According to sources, the mine has been filled with water up to 100 feet. Special teams of Indian Army, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed for the rescue operation. All the parties are running a joint operation. But due to water filling up to a great height, a lot of problems are being faced.

It is being told that on the request of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Special Relief Task Force of the Army has been deployed to rescue the workers. This team includes divers, engineers and other trained army personnel. According to sources related to the Indian Army, the rescue mission is being conducted under the supervision of a senior and experienced officer.

Incidents have happened in 2018 and 2021
In December 2018, a similar incident took place in East Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya. Then 15 laborers were trapped in an illegal coal mine after water from a nearby river entered it. At the same time, another similar incident took place in 2021, in which five workers were trapped in an illegal coal mine filled with water after a dynamite explosion in East Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.
Meghalaya government has been fined
Let us inform you that the National Green Tribunal (NGT) had imposed a fine of Rs 100 crore on the Meghalaya government in 2019 after failing to curb illegal coal mining.
