India and Bangladesh have announced the release of captive fishermen. On Thursday, an agreement was reached between the two countries to release the fishermen imprisoned in each other’s country. There are 95 Indian fishermen detained in Bangladesh and 90 Bangladeshi fishermen detained in India.

According to the agreement, Bangladesh will hand over 95 Indian fishermen to Indian authorities on January 5, while India will release 90 Bangladeshi fishermen on the same day. The Foreign Ministry of Bangladesh made this announcement on Thursday.

A government statement said the mutual exchange of fishermen and their vessels has been worked out keeping in mind primarily the humanitarian and livelihood concerns of the fishing communities on both sides.

The Indian government said in the statement that fishermen often face arrest for accidentally crossing the maritime border while fishing in disputed waters.

Fishermen had caught it several months ago

The statement said that several Indian fishermen have been arrested by Bangladesh authorities in recent months. When they unknowingly crossed the International Maritime Boundary Line and entered the territorial waters of Bangladesh. The Ministry of External Affairs said that several Bangladeshi fishermen have also been caught by Indian authorities in similar circumstances.

Relations between India and Bangladesh remain tense after the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus came to power. India has been expressing concern over attacks on minorities, especially Hindus, in Bangladesh.

Relations worsened further last month after the interim government sent a diplomatic note to New Delhi demanding the extradition of ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Hasina is living in India after fleeing Bangladesh in August following massive anti-government protests.
