Atul Subhash, a 34-year-old software engineer, committed suicide at his home in Bengaluru. He was a resident of Uttar Pradesh. He has left a 24-page suicide note and a 1.5-hour long video, in which he has accused his wife and her family of harassing him and filing false cases against him. Atul’s younger brother Vikas Modi told Aaj Tak that 9 to 10 false cases were pending against his brother. He has given his life fighting against the system.

Vikas Modi told that he came to know about his brother early on Monday. He said, “On Monday at 2.50 in the morning, I got a phone call from an unknown number. The person asked if I had spoken to Atul. I told him that I had spoken to him on Sunday night. He was completely normal in conversation. Then when he asked if he had suicidal thoughts, I snapped at the man and said, ‘What kind of nonsense are you talking?'”

Vikas further explains, “I considered this phone call a prank. But when I checked my WhatsApp, I had received many messages from my brother. He had also sent four emails an hour ago. Names and contacts of some people were also given in it. However, despite this I felt that perhaps my WhatsApp had been hacked. After this, when I called the caller again, I came to know that he was associated with Save Indian Family Foundation, an NGO working for men’s rights.”

After this the NGO informed the police. The police reached the house, but did not break the door first, because they thought that maybe Atul was not at home, because his car was not in the parking lot. Police called him and told him that some incident had happened with his brother, he reached Bengaluru as soon as possible. When Vikas Modi reached Bengaluru a few hours later, he found that his brother had committed suicide. When he went inside the house, he saw that his brother’s body was hanging from the noose.

Modi said, “I could not believe that my brother, who always stood strong in front of me, had done this. He has written on every page of the suicide note that ‘justice should be given’. He cited corruption and constant harassment by his wife’s family as the reasons behind his decision. He revealed that his brother was struggling with several legal issues. Not only this, a demand of Rs 3 crore was also made from him to settle these disputes.
