Bhumi Pednekar highlights AI’s potential to revolutionize filmmaking at World Economic Forum: “I’m most excited about how AI is going to democratize storytelling”
As one of five young global leaders invited to share a transformative idea for a better 2025, Bhumi Pednekar highlighted the potential of AI to democratize filmmaking, increase access to educational films, and enhance opportunities for marginalized communities in the industry.
Bhumi Pednekar, recognized as one of the ‘Young Global Leaders’ by the World Economic Forum for her efforts to improve the world, is attending the WEF Annual Meeting, which runs until January 24.
Citing her 2017 film Toilet: Ek Prem KathaBhumi Pednekar explained how the movie used humor and romance to address critical issues, such as the impact of open defecation on gender inequality, women’s safety, and the health risks associated with inadequate sanitation and lack of indoor plumbing.
“The film became a catalyst for change in India and was used as part of the government’s campaign to eradicate ODF,” she wrote on the WEF blog.
The film was utilized across rural India, where open defecation was most prevalent, as an accessible educational tool. Bhumi Pednekar noted that, alongside government initiatives, the proportion of people practicing open defecation dropped significantly between 2016 and 2022 after the film’s release.
She advocated for advancements in technology and visual effects to make such stories more powerful and impactful.
“Imagine showing the same film, but modified by AI for global audiences, ensuring the message resonates across languages and regions,” she said.
She added, “As an actor and an advocate for equality, I’m most excited about how AI is going to democratize storytelling. I have chosen roles that challenge prevalent beauty standards and center women and marginalized groups like the LGBTQ community. But there are still too few films made with the female gaze or telling queer stories.”
Pednekar highlighted the challenges studios face in funding female-centric films due to high costs and market risks. She believes AI could revolutionize the industry by lowering expenses, speeding up production, and ensuring safety for women and marginalized groups. AI could also automate unbiased casting and detect misconduct patterns.
“AI tools could even help determine fair and impartial compensation for individuals,” she added.
