What is blood money?
Blood money is a practice in which a person guilty of murder can be pardoned if he pays a huge amount as compensation to the family of the deceased. This amount is decided under agreement with the family of the deceased.
Nimisha’s family has intensified efforts to collect blood money. His lawyer Subhash Chandran, while talking to BBC, said that till now two installments of US $ 40,000 (about Rs 38 lakh) have been given. This amount is being used to convince the family of the deceased and reach a compromise.
However, an amount of about $4 lakh (Rs 3.5 crore) still remains to be raised. ‘Save Nimisha Priya International Action Council’ was formed in 2020 for this work. This organization is trying to collect funds and reach an agreement.
role of government
The Government of India has said that this matter is in its cognizance. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said on Tuesday that they are making every possible effort to help Nimisha. After the civil war in Yemen started in 2015, India withdrew its embassy from Sana’a. Now this embassy operates in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. In such a situation, the challenges in matters of negotiations and blood money have increased further.
Nimisha’s family and lawyers are still expecting an apology from the President of Yemen and the family of the deceased.
