10 newborn babies burnt to death in a fire that broke out in the Special Newborn Care Unit of Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College, Jhansi. In this matter, the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) said that we have issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government and the DGP regarding the fire incident. The commission said the report was “really disturbing and reflects negligence that resulted in a “serious violation” of the human rights of the victims as they were in the care of a government institution.

In a statement, NHRC said that we have taken suo motu cognizance of a media report stating that 10 newborn babies died in a fire that broke out in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) of Maharani Lakshmibai Medical College on Friday night. 16 children were injured in the incident, while 37 children were rescued safely. Police officials have confirmed that the fire was caused by an electrical short circuit and that the babies who died were in an incubator.

Human Rights Commission asked for report

The Human Rights Commission said that a notice has been issued to the Chief Secretary of the state and the Director General of Police and a detailed report has been sought within a week. The report should include information about the status of the FIR lodged in the case, action taken against the responsible officials, medical treatment being given to the injured and compensation (if any) given to the victim’s families. The Commission said it would also like to know what steps have been taken or proposed by the authorities to ensure that such incidents do not recur.

Committee will submit investigation report of the case in 7 days

Let us tell you that the Uttar Pradesh government has constituted a four-member committee to investigate the fire incident on Saturday. Regarding the incident, officers nominated by Director Medical and Health, Additional Director Electrical Medical Health Services, DG Fire will also conduct a member investigation and submit a detailed investigation report of the case to the government in the next 7 days.

Post mortem of seven out of 10 newborns was done

Jhansi Additional Superintendent of Police (City) Gyanendra Kumar Singh told PTI that post-mortem of seven infants was conducted on Saturday, while post-mortem of three could not be done as their parents have not been identified yet. The government also rejected reports that the fire extinguishers in the hospital had expired.
