ipl 2025 auction why kkr leave shreyas iyer ceo venky mysore explain reason

New Delhi: Kolkata Knight Riders CEO Venky Mysore has revealed the reason for not retaining IPL 2024-winning captain Shreyas Iyer ahead of the mega auction. Shreyas had led KKR to the most spectacular IPL title win in 2024. Still the franchise did not retain him. Apart from Rinku Singh, the franchise has retained Sunil Narine, Andre Russell, Varun Chakraborty, Ramandeep Singh and Harshit Rana.

Iyer was the first choice for retention

Venky Mysore hinted that it was Shreyas’s decision to part ways with the franchise, due to which he was not retained. He also hinted that Shreyas wanted to know his worth in the auction. Speaking to RevSportz, he said, ‘He was at the top of our list for retention. He is the captain and we had to build everything around him. We chose him in 2022 for this very reason.

With teams like Punjab Kings, Delhi Capitals and Royal Challengers Bangalore looking for captains, Iyer could be the most expensive player in the IPL 2025 mega auction. RCB also wanted to buy him in the 2022 auction.

Consent of both parties is necessary in retention

Mysore also said that the auction retention process requires the consent of both the parties. Mysore said- It is most important for retention that both the parties agree. The franchisee does not have this unilateral right. The player has to consider and agree on many things. If agreement is not reached due to reasons like money or someone estimating their worth then nothing can happen.

Mysore said that he has a good personal relationship with Shreyas, but the batsman wanted to know his value in the auction and he supports the decision. Mysore further said- In this case, what happened was that they felt it was the best and when players go to the auction and test their worth, we always support them.
