The wait for the first rain of winter is over in the plains of North India. Sporadic snowfall was seen earlier also in the higher areas of Jammu and Kashmir. Apart from this, Lahaul-Spiti, Kufri, Shimla and Manali of Himachal Pradesh received the first snowfall of the season. At the same time, it rained on the lower hills of Uttarakhand also. Cold has also increased in the plains of northern parts like Punjab, Haryana, Delhi and Uttar Pradesh. Cold winds have started coming from the hilly areas in Delhi, due to which the shivering cold may increase in the country’s capital.

Temperature dropped in Jammu-Kashmir and Himachal
After the snowfall, the temperature of Pahalgam and Gulmarg reached the lowest level of this season, where temperatures of -7°C and -9°C were recorded respectively. At the same time, rain and snowfall in Kashmir Valley was less than expected. The first snowfall of this season was also recorded in the central and higher reaches of Himachal Pradesh. Light snowfall also occurred in Lahaul-Spiti, Kufri, Shimla and Manali. Places like Sispa, Koksar, Keylong, Gandhala, Sissu and Churdhar in Sirmaur district received good snowfall. In Uttarakhand, light rain was also recorded in Mussoorie, Mukteshwar, Pantnagar, Dehradun and Nainital.
Light rain in the plains
Light rain was also recorded in Punjab’s Patiala, Ambala, Karnal, Chandigarh, parts of Haryana, Delhi, Meerut and Bareilly. Sporadic and mild weather activities will continue in the mountains even today. For the next three days, weather activities will be limited to higher altitude areas. The weather is expected to clear in the mountains between 12th and 13th December.
Cold will increase after snowfall
After snowfall, cold wave conditions may intensify in hilly and plain areas. There will be more chances of cold wave in the lowland areas of Punjab and Haryana. In places like Amritsar, Pathankot, Jalandhar, Bhatinda, Rohtak, Hisar and Karnal, the temperature may drop below normal by 4 degrees Celsius in the next 4-5 days. After December 12, cold wave conditions may intensify in the mountains also.
Danger of heavy rain from Chennai to Kanyakumari
According to the Meteorological Department, there is a warning of heavy rain in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Kerala, Mahe, Karnataka, Rayalaseema, Andhra Pradesh and Yanam. Due to the influence of low pressure area over south-eastern Bay of Bengal and adjacent eastern equatorial Indian Ocean, it is very likely to be heavy over south Peninsular India during 10-13 December. There will be a risk of heavy to very heavy rain in the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu, especially Chennai, Kanchipuram, Tambaram, Puducherry, Karaikal, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Pamban, Tuticorin and Tondi between December 11 and December 13. The day of 11th December (Wednesday) will be most effective, while the weather will start improving from 13th December. There is a possibility of heavy to very heavy rain in the interior areas of Tamil Nadu on December 12.
Changes in weather as the system progresses
On December 12, this low pressure and its cyclonic circulation will move towards the southern peninsula and interior parts of Tamil Nadu. After this, this weak system will move towards Lakshadweep area and south-east Arabian Sea on December 13 and will cause sporadic rain in Kerala. After this this system will move away from the coast. A new weather system is likely to become active on this route between December 15 and 17. However, its intensity will be relatively less.
