Delhi Police on Tuesday destroyed more than 10,600 kg of illegal drugs, worth more than Rs 1,600 crore in the international market, at Biotic Waste Solutions.
Delhi Police said in a statement that Lieutenant Governor VK Saxena was present when the illegal drugs were destroyed. The drug consignment destroyed included cannabis, hashish, heroin, cocaine, LSD, MDMA, poppy seeds, doda poppy, ketamine, injectable drugs and other psychoactive substances.
Following the orders of the Supreme Court, committees were formed by Delhi Police to monitor the destruction of drugs seized from smugglers. These committees prepared a list of drugs seized from cases between 1969 and 2024 that had received disposal orders from the courts.
The Delhi Police statement said that till December 15, Delhi Police registered 1,714 cases under the NDPS Act and arrested 2,169 drug smugglers. In the financial investigation, assets worth approximately Rs 3.13 crore were seized, and confiscation action was taken against Rs 3 crore. Action has been initiated against seven smugglers under PITNDPS, while cases are ongoing against 37 others.
Delhi Police said that from December 2022 till now, Delhi Police has conducted four major destruction initiatives in which more than 43,000 kg of narcotics worth Rs 4,300 crore have been destroyed. Police further said that under the anti-drug campaign, Delhi Police has started a comprehensive campaign of one month from December 1.
According to the police, the operation includes raids on 200 schools, colleges, hostels, shops and hotels and surprise checks of auto-rickshaw and taxi drivers. Hostel wardens, school administrators and citizens are actively engaged in awareness programmes.
