Taking a big decision, the Donald Trump administration canceled the refugee resettlement program. Also, the refugees who were given resettlement approval before January 27, have also been canceled by the Trump administration on Wednesday. After this decision of the Trump administration, thousands of refugees are stranded in many places around the world.
The suspension has been mentioned in the orders signed by US President Trump on Monday. This decision of the Trump administration is raising questions about the people who have got or are going to get approval to go to America after completing the long process. Or if they have booked tickets for America after getting approval, then their travel may be affected.
According to the AP report, the US agency that oversees refugee processing and arrivals told staff and stakeholders that arrivals of refugees to the United States have been canceled until further notice.
16 thousand Afghans will be affected
This decision will also affect more than 16 thousand Afghans who were approved for resettlement after the US withdrawal from Afghanistan in the year 2021. These also include family members of active duty American military personnel serving in the war with American soldiers.
In Trump’s order, the agency was given time to stop all processing and travel before January 27. However, it now seems that the timing of the order has been extended. It is not immediately clear what was the reason for the change.
Refugees are different from people who come directly to the Mexico border with the goal of seeking asylum in the United States. Refugees must live outside the U.S. to be considered for resettlement and are usually referred to the State Department by the United Nations.
At the same time, before coming to America, they have to undergo extensive testing. Once they arrive in the US, they are usually paired with a resettlement agency that helps them adjust to life in the US. This also includes help in finding jobs and enrolling their children in school.
