EXCLUSIVE: Abhijeet Bhattacharya reveals how he lost the iconic song ‘So Gaya Yeh Jahan’; says, “I missed the song because of my own foolishness”
Abhijeet said, “There was a song that I missed out on singing, not because I didn’t want to, but because of my own foolishness. It was a song from before my marriage. At that time, I hadn’t had any film songs. The song was ‘This is how the world became, this is how the sky became.’At that time, I was desperate for work, just trying to get by and make sure I could earn a monthly income. That’s when the opportunity for this song came to me. By then, my movie Anand and Anand had already flopped. The film, starring Sunil Anand, Dev Anand’s son, had music by Barman, but the film was never released. I didn’t even know which hall it was playing in. It was a flop, but people in the industry started to recognize that I had potential. However, they couldn’t offer me work because I didn’t have a name.”
He further added, “Then, I was called by Lakshmikanth ji. He told me that they were going to try a song with Kishore Kumar’s voice and asked me to come in. I thought that my turn would come just like other singers. I had heard that Kavita ji used to do dubbing and that once you got the hang of it, it would be good.”
He added, “I thought things would work out for me the same way. But then, the situation became tricky. I had already taken an advance for a show at Navy Nagar for Durga Puja, which had been planned for months. Since Durga Puja has a special connection with my childhood, I couldn’t cancel it. I had taken a small advance of about 2000 rupees and calculated that I would earn 5000 for the event, enough to cover taxi fare, orchestra, and sound costs, leaving me with a little profit.”
He recalled, “I had no choice but to attend the event. When I reached Navy Nagar, I was told that no one knew me there, but they had already announced my performance. They asked how I could cancel. I tried explaining, but they said I couldn’t back out. I went to Lakshmi ji’s secretary, Chandrakant, and told him about the situation. He, in turn, suggested that they would let Kishore Kumar sing later and asked me to come for the dubbing session.”
Abhijeet added, “I told them they could find someone else to do the dubbing, and I laughed at myself for this decision. It probably seemed funny to them, like a meme you’d see today. In the end, the song I missed out on was given to Nitin Mukesh. He recorded it, and I had the cassette of it at home. I was left wondering how I could have sung that song at that time.”
