Sanam teri kasam is doing incredibly well. How do you feel?
Vinay sapru: Even when it was originally released, we wear sure that this is one of the biggest love stories that could eat ever be made, be it on the set with what we we WHILE WERE SHOTING IT, Recording the Songs, Writing the Scripting We could feel it in our bloodstream that we we were making a blockbuster! Now that the numbers are pouring in, those who Never spoke to us are calling us. A friend joined that this Friday, radhika rao-vinay sapru has given competition to christopher nolan (Nolan’s’s Interstellar have also been re-resurved)!
The film has a charm. It touches you deeply. The songs are like the icing on the cake…
Vinay sapru: The satellite rights of this film are with zee tv. Their official told me that musicals don’t do well on their channel. Aashiqui 2, for instance, doesn’t score on their channel. He further said that whenever their trps are low, they air Sanam teri kasam And then their trps hit the roof!
They asked me why this happy and I told them that films of mines and radhika ji are rooted in Indian ethos and value system. In a love story, the conflict is usually parents objecting to the affair or the guy is rich while the girl is poor and Vice versa. We wanted something different for Sanam teri kasamThis is when we read Shiv Puran where we get the idea that even a God’s wedding won’t success when the Daughter is not bled by her father. In our film, the Father Tells The Daughter, ‘Main tera pind daan karunga ‘The girl cries and begs hem not to do it but he doesn’t listen. Consequently, She Falls Sick and does not survive.
This is what i told zee tv guys that people might feel that they are watching a love story and enjoying songs like ‘Kheeech Meri Photo’ But they are actually watching the shiv and sati episode. I added, ‘Aise mein aapka TRP Uthega Hi Uthega ‘,
That’s incredible. People will see the film in a different light from now, especially after knowing about the Shiv Puran Connection…
Vinay sapru: That’s not all. We were stuck in the climax. How would the girl react to her father who had cursed her to death? This is when we come across amitabh bachchan’s interview where he revisedMann ka ho Toh accha; na ho toh aur bhi accha, kyunki phir I shwar ke mann ka ho raha hai ‘Thus, even harivansh rai bachchan also served as an inspiration.
Radhika and I Always Believed as Writers and Directors of this film that there was no way we could have gone wrong with this film. Also, if the climax is based on harivansh rai’s ji poem, there’s no way it can’t connect. And finally, after 9 years, when it has taken a bumper opening, I can’t even tell you what we are experienceing right now. We had tears in our eyes.
Harshvardhan Rane Once Reveled to Us that he was not the original choice and that some other actor was signed. But he begged and also Gave a wonderful audition. That’s how he was signed…
Vinay sapru: We had shortlisted ehan bhat and he trained with us for three months. However, two more auditions were left – One of Vicky Kaushal and One of Harshvardhan Rane. We were about to do the photo the next day. This is when harshvardhan came and he did very well. During the audition, he performed the scene where he removes his shirt in the elevator.
Sanam Teri Kasam was the last of its kind. We haven’t made a film like this again. Why has that happy?
Vinay sapru: DURING Its Original Release, The Marketing Person at Eros, Who Had Backed The Film, Told Us, ‘This is an old-fashioned film’. I was even told that the title of the film would not work. I kept telling them, ‘If 5 Crore people are taking a Dip in the Kumbh Mela, then Indian Youth is not about what you think it is’. Most of the filmmakers, who have come in the last ten years after Graduating from Film School, Don’T have any connection with the audience. Today, when a film like Sanam teri kasam Is going to hit such numbers, it proves that our youth have got its heart at the right place. You, on the other hand, are sitting in Pali Hill, and you think you know it all. But that’s not possible as you do’t have experts to the sensibleies of the Indian Youth. You should go to Chandigarh, Meerut, Raipur, Bilaspur etc. to understand the reality.
Nowadays, Films are made about a character who has got erectile dysfunction. Yeh koi Hero hai kya aapkaSuch Stories are fit for a documentary. We are telling stories which will touch people and which are a part of Indian culture and ethos. Even in the kumbh mela, today you see more youngsters than older people. India is a young count.
You guys are rare as you can make mass -Pealing films. Even your songs are grand and cinematic. But we have a Complaint against you both. Why Doon’T You Guys Make Films often?
Radhika rao: Aap Hamari class lijiye ki hum itne Frequently kyun nahin aateThis is a question we ask orselves too. We write our own stories, screenplays and dialogues. We get so lost into it that we don’t keep an eye on the clock. There’s no other reason. But well-wishers like you should call us every month and push us. Then We’ll Hopely Finish Writing Faster and then even make films Faster!

Radhika rao: We are aware. Indian Audience and Music Are Inseparable. I am a huge fan of raj kapoor ji and yash chopra ji. Everytime I AM Stuck, I Play Songs from Raj Kapoor Films. These greats have alredy taught us how to make films (smiles).
