This Diwali saw the biggest box office clash of the year in the form of Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 and Singham AgainIn an exclusive interview with Bollywood Hungamaveteran trade analyst Taran Adarsh said that although both the films did well, Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 is slightly ahead of the Rohit Shetty starrer.
EXCLUSIVE: Taran Adarsh feels Singham Again could have been better: “It wasn’t a bad film, it could have reached greater heights”
,Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has done very well,” said Adarsh. ,Singham Again could have done much better. I feel one of the reasons why Bhool Bhulaiyaa 3 has an edge is because that was a solo hero film and the other side had so many actors.”
He said that Kartik Aaryan stood out with the numbers the film made. But he was quick to add, “Of course, I wouldn’t say that it is entirely his contribution. It’s a franchise. That’s the most important part. There was Madhuri Dixit, Vidya Balan, Triptii Dimri, a fantastic supporting cast. It was well promoted. The songs are excellent. So, overall it was good package that came to the audience and they lapped it up. But on the other hand, you had Singham Againwhich was more of action and drama. The focus on music was missing. I did mention that the music should have been stronger.”
Adarsh said that an important factor that he found missing in the Ajay Devgn starrer was its signature dialogue. “There is a line in Pushpa – Jhukega nahin – which was there in the first part and is there in the second part,” he said. “Had this dialogue not been there in the second part, I would have been disappointed. Why I am mentioning Pushpa in Singham is because there was a dialogue in Singham – Come mother satakli. When I saw the film, I was wondering did I miss that dialogue or I couldn’t hear it. They should have used that dialogue. And those fiery sequences when this dialogue comes were missing. That was one observation I had post-release. When I spoke to a lot of exhibitors, they were in touch with the audience and the audience was saying – Woh dialogue kahan hai?”
Speaking about other shortcomings of Singham AgainAdarsh added, “Somewhere I feel the writing could have been sharper. Certain scenes should have been better; more sharply executed. Rohit Shetty is a master when it comes to masala entertainers. That was somewhere lacking or muted. It’s a huge brand with a massive cast.”
But giving credit where it’s due, Adarsh was impressed with the way Shetty brought such a big cast together. “I did tell this to Rohit after I saw the film that to get this cast on hand is very difficult. To get two actors is difficult in today’s times. But when you have so many actors in today’s times, I think it’s a very tough thing,” he said.
The veteran trade analyst also said that a budget of a film increases if there is action. “It’s a very, very expensive film, actually,” said Adarsh. “To make an action film, you have to have that additional budget, and that too the kind of action that Rohit Shetty does. But when it comes to Pushpathe rawness and action sequences, the way they have executed it, especially the introduction, bowls you over. So, I think something somewhere was lagging. It wasn’t a bad film. It could have reached greater heights.”
