Under the leadership of farmer leaders Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal, farmers will march towards the national capital as part of their ‘Delhi Chalo’ movement. This march will start from Shambhu Border from December 6, in which about 100 people will participate.
Talking about his decision, Pandher said, ‘We have been sitting here for the last eight months. We were accused of modifying our tractors, so we have now decided to go to Delhi on foot. He told that the farmers’ movement is getting wide support including Khap Panchayats and business community of Haryana.
What are the demands of the farmers?
Farmers have presented their 12 demands, of which legal guarantee of Minimum Support Price (MSP) and justice for the victims of Lakhimpur Kheri violence are prominent. Expressing his commitment towards the peaceful protest, Pandher said, ‘The Haryana administration has accused us of possessing weapons, but we will march peacefully.’
In response, the Haryana government has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 in Ambala, banning public meetings and processions. To maintain law and order, security arrangements like deployment of paramilitary forces, drones and water cannons have been made.
‘Government should let us march peacefully’
The farmers have appealed to the government to allow their march to take place peacefully. Pandher said, ‘We want the government to allow us to exercise our democratic right to protest.’ This march is taking place after several months of stalled dialogue with the central government.
Pandher said, ‘We had four rounds of talks with the Center in February, but no talks have taken place since February 18.’ He called on the government to resume talks to address their concerns.
