Former Chief Minister of Karnataka, Foreign Minister and former Governor of Maharashtra SM Krishna passed away. He breathed his last at 2:45 am at his residence. His mortal remains will be taken to Maddur today. SM Krishna was born in 1932. His full name is Somanahalli Mallaiya Krishna. He was the Chief Minister of Karnataka from 1999 to 2004 and the Governor of Maharashtra from 2004 to 2008. On 22 May 2009, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh included Krishna in the Union Cabinet and on 23 May 2009, handed over the responsibility of the Ministry of External Affairs.

SM Krishna’s father’s name is SC Mallaiya. Krishna completed his graduation from Maharaja’s College, Mysore. Then took a law degree from Government College, Bangalore. He went to America for higher education. After graduating from there, he started teaching international law. His interest in active politics arose in America. There he campaigned for the presidential election of John F. Kennedy. Soon after his return from Karnataka, he was elected a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly in 1962. He married Prema on April 29, 1964.
political career
He was elected MP several times from Mandya, Karnataka. He served as a minister in the regimes of Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. He became the Minister of State for Industry and Finance during the tenure of Indira Gandhi between 1983-84 and Rajiv Gandhi between 1984-85. He was elected Rajya Sabha member in 1996 and 2006. He was a member of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly at different times. Between 1989-1992, he was the Speaker of the Karnataka Legislative Assembly and Deputy Chief Minister. In 1999, he became the President of Karnataka Pradesh Congress and led the party to victory in the state. In this way he remained the Chief Minister of the state till 2004. He supported public-private partnership.
In 2004 he became the Governor of Maharashtra. He resigned from his post on 5 March 2008 with the aim of returning to active politics. On March 22, 2009, Dr. Manmohan Singh included him in his cabinet and entrusted him with the responsibility of the Ministry of External Affairs.
