On the one hand, where excise duty on petrol has been increased by Rs 2, the government has decided to increase the excise duty by 2 rupees on diesel. The new rates of Petrol-DIESEL will be applicable from tomorrow i.e. Tuesday.
Actually, excise duty on petrol and diesel in India is a tax imposed by the central government, which makes a large part of the price of fuel. At present, excise duty on petrol is Rs 19.90 per liter. At the same time, excise duty on diesel is about Rs 15.80 per liter. It is worth noting that in 2014, excise duty on petrol was Rs 9.48 per liter and Rs 3.56 on diesel, which increased several times later.
In the year 2021, excise duty on petrol and diesel was ₹ 27.90 and ₹ 21.80 per liter. In May 2022, the central government had cut Rs 8 on petrol and Rs 6 on diesel as a relief, after which these rates were implemented. The base price of petrol and diesel in India is currently around Rs 32. On this, the central government is charging excise duty at Rs 33 and later different state governments charge VAT and cess according to their own, which increases the prices of diesel and petrol by three times.
Petrol-DIESEL price in four metros currently
The price of petrol in New Delhi on Monday is Rs 94.72 per liter. The price of petrol in Mumbai is Rs 104.21. The price of petrol in Kolkata is Rs 103.94 per liter. At the same time, the price of petrol in Chennai is Rs 100.75 per liter. Talking about diesel, the price of diesel in New Delhi is Rs 87.62. At the same time, the price of diesel in Mumbai is Rs 92.15. The price of diesel in Kolkata is Rs 90.76 per liter and the price of diesel in Chennai is Rs 92.34 per liter.
