New Delhi: If Jasprit Bumrah gets hurt again at the same place where he had surgery, it can prove to be quite dangerous for Bumrah’s career according to former New Zealand fast bowler Shane Bond. Bond’s career was also finished prematurely due to back injuries. Bumrah has not played any match since the New Year Test in Sydney earlier this year. On the second day of this match, Bumrah went out of the ground for a scan. Earlier it was described as a back cramps, but later it came out a stress fracture, due to which he was out of the recently concluded Champions Trophy. Bumrah is currently rehabiting the BCCI’s Center of Excellence in Bangalore and there is no clarity about their full fitness whether he will play for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2025. Bond worked as Bumrah’s bowling coach for Mumbai Indians for many years. He believes that Bumrah’s workload will have to be carefully managed so that his injury does not emerge again.

Bond, currently as a bowling coach of Rajasthan Royals, said that as soon as Bumrah went to a scan after bowling only five overs on the Sydney Test, he suspected that it was a stress -related injury. Bonds were one of the first fast bowlers to undergo back surgery this century. He underwent this surgery at the age of 29, which is the same age when Bumrah also underwent his surgery. Bond played cricket despite injuries till the age of 34, but eventually retired from all formats within the first Test and then within six months.

In a conversation with The Cricket Monthly in 2010, Bond said, “If I used to play a few matches consecutive matches, my body started to break and he was tired of the rehab.” Bond said that there is a risk of the most injuries for the fast bowlers when they make a quick change in Test cricket from T20. This is why he is worried for Bumrah as India have to play a series of five Test matches in England in June, which will start exactly one month after the IPL.

Bond said, ‘Look, I think Bumrah will be fine, but it completely depends on his charge management. Given the program and the upcoming tour, where to rest and where they can be the most danger, it will have to be decided. Changes in Test cricket from IPL will be a big risk. India’s England tour program is quite busy, in which five Test matches are to be played between June 28 and August 3. Bond said that India and Bumrah should not put too much weight on him like a tour of Australia, where he had thrown a total of 151.2 overs in five Tests, of which 52 overs were only in Melbourne’s Boxing Day Test.

Moving forward, Bond said he would not want Bumrah to play more than two consecutive Test matches. ‘He is very important for the next World Cup and other tournaments. So seeing five Tests in England, I would not like to play more than two consecutive matches. Going directly into Test cricket after IPL will be a big risk for him. How to manage it is the most important question. If we can keep them fit in the entire English summer, then I will be confident that they can stay fit in other formats as well.
