Indian space agency ISRO on Friday released a video of the successful docking of satellites under its Space Docking Experiment (SpaDeX). This docking has made India the fourth country to achieve this technological feat after America, Russia and China.

ISRO shared the video

In the video, both satellites are seen connecting with each other in space. After this, ISRO’s new Chief V. Narayanan congratulated the team of the space agency, which has made this special mission successful.

The space agency said in the caption of the video released on ‘X’, ‘ISRO has successfully completed the docking of two SPADEX satellites (SDX-01 and SDX-02) on the morning of January 16, 2025.’ In space, docking technology is necessary when multiple rockets need to be launched for a single mission.

Why is SpaDeX important for India?

The docking experiment is extremely important for India’s future space missions, which include Chandrayaan-4, Gaganyaan, setting up the space station and landing astronauts on the Moon. ISRO has also said that undocking and power transfer will be investigated in the coming days. Last October, the government had announced that India will have its own space station by 2035, which will be known as ‘Indian Space Station’.

The SpaDeX mission is an important step for India, which aims to develop automated rendezvous and docking technology. This technique is essential for future space missions, such as missions to the Moon and beyond. With the success of this mission, India has become one of the few countries which have mastered this advanced technology.
