Bruce Lee, who became a global star in a very short time and was an expert in martial arts, was born on this day. On November 27, 1940, actor and martial arts expert Bruce Lee was born in San Francisco, California.

In his very short career, Lee became a movie star in Asia and later a pop-culture icon in America. Li was born while his father, a Chinese opera star, was on tour in America. In 1941, the Lee family moved back to Hong Kong. Growing up, Li became a child actor, appearing in nearly 20 Chinese films.

Kung Fu martial art brought to the fore
Bruce Lee also studied dance and trained in the Wing Chun style of Gung Fu (also known as Kung Fu). In 1959, Lee returned to America. Here he eventually attended the University of Washington and opened a martial-arts school in Seattle. In 1964, he married Linda Emery. She gave birth to Brandon Lee in 1965, the first of the couple’s two children.

Bruce Lee returned to Los Angeles in 1966
Lee moved to Los Angeles in 1966 and Bruce appeared on the television program The Green Hornet (1966–1967). In it he played the role of Hornet’s acrobatic partner, Kato. Lee also appeared in karate tournaments around the United States and continued to teach the martial art to private clients, including actor Steve McQueen.

Had returned to Hong Kong after not getting better work in Hollywood
Lee returned to Hong Kong in the early 1970s in search of better acting roles than were available in Hollywood. He successfully established himself as a star in Asia with the action movies The Big Boss (1971) and The Way of the Dragon (1972). He himself wrote, directed and acted in it. Lee’s next film, Enter the Dragon, was released in the United States by Hollywood studio Warner Bros. in August 1973.

Died at the age of 32 in Hong Kong
Tragically, Lee died in Hong Kong a month earlier on 20 July. Lee is said to have died due to an adverse reaction to a painkiller. Enter the Dragon was a box-office hit. It eventually grossed over $200 million and Lee posthumously became a film icon in America.

Bruce Lee’s body buried in Seattle
Lee’s body was brought back to Seattle, where he was buried. His sudden death at the young age of 32 gave rise to rumors and speculations about the reasons for his demise. One theory was that Lee was murdered by Chinese gangsters, while another rumor spread that the actor was the victim of a curse.

Son also died at the age of 28
The theory of a family curse resurfaced when Lee’s 28-year-old son Brandon, who had followed in his father’s footsteps and become an actor, was killed in an accidental shooting on the set of the film The Crow on March 31, 1993. The junior Lee was also buried next to his father in Seattle’s Lake View Cemetery.
