It is said that ages ago the ocean was churned in search of nectar. The nectar came out, but there was a fierce war over it between the two parties who had worked hard to get it. There were gods on one side and demons on the other. This was the first time that people with two different cultures, thoughts and ideas came together for a big goal. He even reached his goal but could not achieve it. Why? Because the goal was nectar and the stubbornness and greed to have exclusive rights on it did not allow it to be left to anyone else. There was a scuffle and in this scuffle the nectar spilled from the nectar pot several times and fell at different places.
What is Mahakumbh?
What happened next in the story? This is another matter, but the main thing is that the search for nectar continues even today. This search for nectar brings the Indian people together at one place. In front of the flowing waters of holy rivers, all the separate identities of everyone get hidden and they remain just human beings. Then, only one voice comes from the living clay statues that wade waist-deep in the Ganga and after taking a dip, rise up with a jerk, Har Har Gange, Jai Ganga Maiya. The ghats of Ganga become the place where the ocean of worldliness is churned and from this churning one gets the nectar of the feeling of unity. The event under which this entire process takes place is called Mahakumbh.
Mahakumbh organized in Prayagraj
Mahakumbh-2025 is being organized this time in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh. Organizing Kumbh Melas is an ancient tradition, which are organized at four major pilgrimage sites in India. The question is how such a huge crowd, such a huge gathering and for so many days, this date of confluence of spirituality and faith is decided. Also, how is it known at which place Kumbh is going to be held? Who is it who takes all these decisions?
The answer to these questions is astronomy. Where will Kumbh be held? This decision is made on the basis of astronomy, astrology, and religious beliefs. Kumbh Melas are held alternately at four locations:
Prayagraj (Uttar Pradesh)
Haridwar (Uttarakhand)
Ujjain (Madhya Pradesh)
Nashik (Maharashtra)
How is the location decided?
The position of the planets Sun, Moon and Jupiter plays an important role in deciding the location of the Kumbh Mela. When the Sun and Moon are in Capricorn and Jupiter is in Taurus, then the Kumbh Mela is held in Prayagraj. At the same time, when the Sun is in Aries and Jupiter in Aquarius, the Kumbh Mela is organized in Haridwar. Along with this, when the Sun is in Leo and the planet Jupiter is also in Leo, then the Kumbh Mela takes place in Ujjain. Finally, when the Sun is in Leo and Jupiter is in Leo or Cancer, then the Kumbh Mela is held in Nashik.
Why is Kumbh (Maha Kumbh) organized every 12 years?
Kumbh Mela is organized every 12 years. Kumbh Mela is organized at every place once in 12 years. Apart from this, Ardh Kumbh Mela takes place in Haridwar and Prayagraj at an interval of 6 years. Kumbh Mela is related to the story of churning of the ocean. It is believed that a few drops of nectar from the Amrit Kalash had fallen on these four places, due to which these places became sacred.
This event is not only important from religious and spiritual point of view, but it also enriches Indian culture, tradition and history. The reason for organizing the Kumbh Mela at an interval of 12 years is related to astronomical calculations and Hindu astrology. Its main basis is the position of Sun, Moon and planet Jupiter. When the planet Jupiter enters Aries or Leo and the position of Sun and Moon creates a special yoga, then the Kumbh Mela is organized.
This is the astronomical and scientific reason
Actually, the planet Jupiter takes about 12 years to revolve around the Sun. Therefore, every 12 years this planet has a special contribution in determining the location of the Kumbh Mela. Apart from this, it is believed that due to the change in the position of the planets and change in the zodiac, the rivers also rejuvenate themselves every 12 years, due to which their water becomes like nectar, hence, Kumbh Mela is celebrated at an interval of 12 years in different cycles. A fair is organized.
What is the story of Kumbh?
This is the general information about organizing Kumbh and Mahakumbh. On the basis of which Kumbh Melas are organised, but in reality this is an incomplete fact, not complete. To know the whole story, we will have to go back to the age-old story from where the ground for the Maha Kumbh Mela was prepared.
It so happened that when 14 gems came out from the churning of the ocean, the last one got Amrit Kumbh. Dhanvantari Dev, the father of Ayurveda, came out of the sea holding it in his hands. The Amrit Kumbh had just come out and there was a competition among the demons over it to take possession of it and drink it before the gods. Swarabhanu was one of King Bali’s commanders in his army. He could run at high speed in water, land and sky. He snatched the Amrit Kumbh from the hands of Dhanvantari Dev in a moment and took it towards the sky. Even among the group of gods, Indra’s son Jayant was gazing in the same direction. As soon as he saw Swarbhanu rushing towards the nectar, he immediately took the form of a crow and flew after her and started snatching the nectar pot from her hand in the sky.
Amrit fell at four places
Seeing Jayant trying alone, Sun, Moon and Jupiter, the guru of the gods, also joined him. Some other demons also flew in the sky to support Swarbhanu and amidst all this, there was a fight for the nectar of Kumbh. In this snatch, nectar spilled from Amrit Kumbh and fell in Haridwar for the first time. In this way Haridwar became a pilgrimage site. The second time the nectar was spilled, it fell in Prayag at the confluence of Ganga-Yamuna and Saraswati. In this way this place became a place of pilgrimage. In the next two attempts, nectar spilled from the Kumbh fell into the Kshipra River in Ujjain and for the fourth time, drops of nectar fell into the Godavari River in Nashik. In this way, drops of nectar fell twice in river Ganga and also in river Kshipra and Godavari. Kshipra river is also called Northern Ganga, whereas Godavari river has been mentioned several times in the Puranas by the name Gomti Ganga. Due to being Amrit Salila, both the rivers are as sacred as Ganga.
In this way these four river banks were declared bathing places of pilgrimage. Taking bath in these rivers and then doing charity etc. on their banks is considered very auspicious. Not only big events like Kumbh are held on the banks of these rivers, apart from this, people also come here to take bath on every auspicious date. In which the dates of Purnima, Amavasya and Ekadashi are important.
Importance of zodiac signs in organizing Kumbh
Now the question arises that why is Kumbh organized only every 12 years? The answer is that the entire celebration of Kumbh depends on the position of the stars and the location of the planets and constellations. When Jayant flew with the nectar pot, he could reach heaven in 12 days. One day of the gods is equal to one year of humans, hence in the context of the same event, Kumbh is organized at an interval of 12 years. Sun, Moon and Jupiter were involved in protecting the nectar of Kumbh. Therefore, the position of their zodiac signs has special importance in organizing Kumbh.
The scale of Kumbh being organized at an interval of 12 years is also not completely true. Actually, there is a cycle of Kumbh event, in which it starts with the Kumbh event in Haridwar. Kumbh is organized every three years, which happens at one place in rotation. Its order is Haridwar, Prayag, Ujjain and Nashik.
What is Simhastha?
At the time when Kumbh Mela is organized in Nashik, Jupiter enters Leo and Sun enters Aries. This is called Simhastha. This position of the planets happens once in 12 years and is called Mahakumbh. That is why this misconception also arose that Mahakumbh comes once in 12 years. Whereas in reality, Kumbh is organized every three years in rotation and after Kumbh is organized at one place, this cycle of organizing the next time at the same place comes only after 12 years.
Kumbh of a particular place has special significance. For example, due to the religiously high status of Hari Ki Paidi Ghat in Haridwar, the Kumbh organized here is considered important from the religious point of view. Similarly, Prayagraj is important because it is the place of Triveni Sangam. Ardh Kumbh is organized every six years at both these religious places. Apart from this, Magh Mela, Ganga Dussehra and other bathing fairs are organized at these places.
