On the occasion of the 69th death anniversary of Majaz Lucknowi, a romantic and revolutionary poet of his time, Fatiha was organized at his grave located in Nishatganj cemetery, Paper Mill Colony, under the joint aegis of AMU Old Boys Association Lucknow and Majaz Memorial Trust. Association President SM Shoaib, while addressing the Alig community and other Urdu lovers present on the occasion, said that Asrarul Haq, popularly known as Majaz Lucknowi, was a prominent Alig, who wrote Nazr-e-Aligarh in 1933. The poem became the famous anthem of AMU in 1954.

He said that Majaz, known as Keats of Urdu, was related to the movement of progressive writers. He was born on 19 October 1911 in Rudauli town of present Ayodhya district and died on 5 December 1955 at the age of only 44. He was buried in Nishatganj cemetery of Lucknow.

The program started with the recitation of the Holy Quran by Anwar Habib Alvi. On this occasion, former joint secretary of the association Atif Hanif said that it would be unfair to limit Majaj to any one area or class. Every person who loves Urdu literature is his admirer, although Fatiha Khawani has been started on his death anniversary by AMU Old Boys Association, Lucknow for the last several years, but most of the people present today are not related to Aligarh Muslim University, which is dedicated to the study of Urdu. It is an expression of love and manners.

During this, Parvez Malikzada said that Majaz cannot be limited to any one period or era. The significance of his poetry is the same today as it was sixty-seventy years ago. Life was unfaithful to him, otherwise it was quite possible that he would have proved to be the greatest Urdu poet of this century.

Dr. Ehtisham Khan, Director, American Institute of Indian Studies, said that the welcome initiative started by AMU Old Boys Association Lucknow needs to be further promoted and it is heartening that others are also following AMUBA’s initiative. And are getting inspired by the efforts and formation of Mazaz Memorial Trust is a good step.
