On Friday, armed people from hilly areas attacked two villages in Manipur’s Imphal East district with guns and bombs. Police said that the local people became frightened due to these attacks. Panic spread in the area. However, there has been no news of any casualty.
A senior police officer in Imphal East district told PTI that no one was reported injured in the attacks in Sansabi and Thamnapokpi villages. He said that after the attack, security forces retaliated, resulting in heavy firing in both the villages.
The police officer said that armed men opened indiscriminate fire and started throwing bombs in Sansabi village and surrounding areas around 10.45 am, prompting security personnel to retaliate.
After the firing started between armed people and security personnel, local people were seen running here and there. There was an atmosphere of chaos everywhere. The police officer said that armed men also attacked Thamnapokpi village in the district at around 11.30 am, causing panic among the residents there.
Security forces, including CRPF personnel, rescued many women, children and elderly people trapped in the crossfire. Let us tell you that since May last year, more than 250 people have been killed and thousands of people rendered homeless in caste violence between Meitei and Kuki-Jo groups in Manipur.
