Nana Patekar recounted the moment when Sooraj Barjatya, then an assistant director, brought him his shoes on set. “One day, he brought me my shoes. I said, ‘Don’t do this, I can get my own shoes,’ but he insisted. He said, ‘No, sir (with folded hands).’ I told him, ‘Sooraj, you are the heir to this big organization, don’t do this.’ But he replied, ‘I am the assistant, this is my job,’” Patekar shared.
Sooraj Barjatya’s Unchanging Nature
Years later, when Patekar and Barjatya crossed paths at a function, the director’s humility remained unchanged. “He saw me coming and again bowed down with his hands folded. I was shocked that he hasn’t changed one bit. He is just as simple. He is not fabricating his niceness; he is genuinely like that,” Patekar added.
A Legacy of Heartwarming Cinema
Sooraj Barjatya, known for directing iconic family dramas like I loved you, Who are you?, Hum Saath Saath Hain,and Prem Ratan Dhan Paayohas built a reputation for creating heartwarming and value-driven films. His latest directorial, Unchaiwhich featured stalwarts like Amitabh Bachchan and Neena Gupta, earned him a National Award for Best Director. Barjatya, in an earlier interview with SCREEN, hinted at collaborating with Salman Khan for his next project, though no official announcement has been made yet.
