Tamil superstar Dhanush’s production house, Wunderbar Movies, recently filed a civil suit against actress Nayanthara and her husband, filmmaker Vignesh Shivan, over alleged copyright infringement. The issue pertains to visuals from the 2015 film Naanum Rowdy Dhaan used in the Netflix documentary Nayanthara: Beyond the Fairytale. On Wednesday, the matter was heard before a Madras High Court bench led by Justice Abdul Quddhose, who instructed Nayanthara and Vignesh Shivan to respond to the suit.

Lawyer Denies Infringement
Responding to the allegations, Nayanthara’s lawyer, Rahul Dhawan, addressed the claims in an interview with Hindustan Times. He stated, “Our response is that there is no infringement or violation because what has been utilized by us in the docu series is not part of behind-the-scenes (from the film). The same is part of a personal library. Therefore, this is not an infringement.”
Dhanush has sought damages of Rs 10 crores, asserting that the footage, featured in the Netflix documentary’s trailer, was used prior without consent. The three-second clip in question was reportedly behind-the-scenes content from Naanum Rowdy Dhaan,
Nayanthara Writes an Open Letter
Nayanthara recently addressed the matter publicly with an open letter on Instagram, expressing her dismay. A portion of the letter read: “It’s almost been 10 years since the release of the film, and it is a long time for someone to continue to be this vile while wearing a mask in front of the world. I have not forgotten all the horrible things that you said about the film that was one of your biggest hits as a producer and a film that is loved by all even today.”
Released in 2015, Naanum Rowdy Dhaan starred Nayanthara opposite Vijay Sethupathi. Directed by Vignesh Shivan, the film was produced by Dhanush under his Wunderbar Films banner. It remains a beloved movie among fans for its unique storyline and performances.
The Netflix documentary showcases Nayanthara’s journey as an actress, a wife, and a mother. Featuring personal accounts from close friends and colleagues, including Rana Daggubati, Taapsee Pannu, and Nagarjuna Akkineni, the film highlights her work ethic and personal transformation.
