Indian Institute of Technology Madras (IIT Madras) has created history by launching the ‘Fine Arts and Culture Excellence’ (FACE) Admission Scheme. This unique initiative has been brought to encourage students who have made notable achievements in arts and cultural activities.
From the session 2025-26, IIT Madras will start its prestigious B.Tech and B.S. The programs will allocate two additional seats for each program. One of these seats will be reserved for women candidates and the other will be gender-neutral.
Director of IIT Madras, Prof. V. Kamakoti said, “IIT Madras has started this new initiative to recognize the cultural and artistic excellence of the students. “This step will promote diversity and richness in the education system of IITs.”
Admission Process and Eligibility
Candidates wishing to apply for FACE admission must meet the following qualifications:
1. JEE (Advanced) Qualification: The candidate must qualify JEE (Advanced) 2025 and obtain a position in the Common Rank List (CRL) or relevant category rank list.
2. Educational Qualification: Must have minimum marks in class 12th as per the eligibility criteria of JEE (Advanced).
3. Achievement in Arts and Culture: Must be recognized in the arts and cultural achievements mentioned in the official list.
4. Nationality: Candidate must be an Indian citizen or OCI/PIO who has opted to be treated as an Indian citizen at the time of JEE (Advanced) registration.
The application process for FACE admission will be separate from the JoSAA portal and for this, candidates will have to apply on the special FACE portal.
Ranking and seat allotment
FACE Rank List (FRL) will be prepared for FACE admission, in which students will be given marks on the basis of their art and cultural achievements. Seat allotment will be done in several rounds:
• The candidate getting the seat will have to deposit the seat acceptance fee within the prescribed time limit.
• After seat acceptance, candidates can choose ‘Freeze’ or ‘Slide’ option.
• It will be mandatory for the candidate to go through the JoSAA process for admission.
Step towards cultural excellence
The FACE scheme reflects the new vision of IIT Madras, which recognizes artistic and cultural talent along with academic achievements. Pro. Kamakoti said, “This initiative not only adds a new dimension to the admission process but also broadens the definition of excellence in IITs.”
This step of IIT Madras can become an inspiration for other IIT institutes also. More information is available on the FACE portal to welcome the first batch of students under this scheme in 2025.
Union Minister of State for Education Sukant Majumdar said that FIRs have been registered against several self-proclaimed institutions/universities and show cause/warning notices have been issued to unauthorized institutions awarding illegal degrees.
