A British MP has introduced a parliamentary motion to mark the 35th anniversary of the ‘genocide’ of Kashmiri Pandit Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir. Conservative Party MP Bob Blackman introduced an Early Day Motion (EDM) on this issue in the House of Commons.

What is early day motion?

EDM is a way for British MPs to draw the attention of Parliament to a particular issue. The EDM said that this House recalls with deep sorrow and disappointment the 35th anniversary of the attacks by cross-border terrorists and their supporters on the minority Hindu community in the Kashmir Valley in January 1990.

The resolution expressed condolences to the British Hindu citizens whose friends and families were killed, raped, injured and forcibly displaced in this planned genocide. Also, a promise has been made to protect the rights of Hindus in Britain, which also includes the right to demand justice.

Concerns and demands of the proposal

The resolution states that the atrocities committed against Kashmiri Hindu minorities have not yet received justice and recognition. Those supporting cross-border terrorism have been strongly condemned. Concern was expressed in the proposal that organizations supporting terrorism are active in Britain.

This resolution states that under the international principle ‘Responsibility to Protect’, states and the international community need to take effective steps to prevent genocide and crimes against humanity. An appeal has been made to the Government of India to recognize and accept the genocide of Hindus in Jammu and Kashmir. It has also been said that occupation of properties of Kashmiri Hindu community is still going on.
