Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday attended the opening ceremony of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup as the chief guest at the Jaber Al-Ahmad International Stadium in Kuwait. This is his two-day visit to the Gulf country. This is the first visit of any Indian Prime Minister in 43 years. PM Modi is on a visit to Kuwait on the invitation of Kuwaiti Emir Sheikh Meshal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah.
PM Modi attended the grand inauguration ceremony along with the Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Kuwait. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a press release that the event also provided an opportunity for Prime Minister Modi to have informal talks with the leadership of Kuwait. Kuwait was to play Oman in the opening match of the eight-team tournament.
Kuwait is hosting the biennial Arabian Gulf Cup with the participation of eight countries including the GCC countries, Iraq and Yemen. This tournament is one of the most prominent sporting events in the region. Kuwait has won this tournament the most number of times among the participating countries.
Earlier, addressing a large gathering of the Indian community at a special event ‘Hala Modi’ at the Sheikh Saad Al-Abdullah Indoor Sports Complex in the city, Modi praised the contribution of the Indian diaspora to global development and said that in India ” Has the potential to become the “Skill Capital of the World”.
PM Modi said, “Hundreds of Indians come to Kuwait every year. You have added Indian touch to Kuwaiti society. You have filled the canvas of Kuwait with the colors of Indian skills. You have combined the essence of India’s talent, technology and tradition in Kuwait.”
The Prime Minister expressed happiness over the presence of Indians from different corners of the country in the Gulf country and called it “Mini-Hindustan”. Modi is going to meet the Amir, Crown Prince and Prime Minister of Kuwait on Sunday.
