Ram Gopal Varma and Sandeep Reddy Vanga appear to share a deep mutual respect. While Varma showered praise on Vanga’s hit family crime drama AnimalsVanga acknowledged Varma as an inspiration during his acceptance of the Best Editing award. Recently, the two filmmakers had a conversation where they both challenged and admired each other.
Ram Gopal Varma asks Sandeep Reddy Vanga if he can make a film on Baahubali, Sandeep responds with “no”
Ram Gopal Varma put Sandeep Reddy Vanga on the spot with a direct challenge. “I’m asking you a question. Answer immediately, no pauses. Can you make a film on Baahubali?” Sandeep paused for a moment, flashed a grin, pointed at Varma, and replied, “I’ll try, sir. Maybe, in the future.” Varma, initially amused by the hesitation, scolded him and said, “That’s not the right answer. You should respond with either yes or no.”
Sandeep hesitated again and said he’d try, but Ram Gopal Varma reprimanded him once more. “Sandeep, that’s not right. You can’t be diplomatic.” After Sandeep finally admitted his “immediate” answer was no, Varma pressed on with another question. “Okay, he says no. So, can you make a better film than BaahubaliSandeep responded again with, “I’ll try,” prompting Varma to laugh and shake his head. “No trying. It’s done! The answer’s out. Superb,” Varma exclaimed.
The veteran filmmaker then asked Sandeep Reddy Vanga what would happen if his cult 1990 action film Shiva (starring Nagarjuna) and Sandeep’s 2017 Telugu hit Arjun Reddy (starring Vijay Deverakonda) released on the same day. He asked whose film would perform better at the box office. When Sandeep chose ShivaRam Gopal Varma suggested he was being modest and diplomatic. To turn the tables, Sandeep asked Varma to make a great film again, so that audiences would say “RGV is RGV,” rather than just “RGV is back.”
Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s next project, spiritis a Telugu film starring Prabhas. Meanwhile, Ram Gopal Varma’s latest directorial was Vyuhamwhich released earlier this year.
