Veteran actors Mithun Chakraborty and Shakti Kapoor share a long-standing friendship, having starred together in films like Gunda, Guru,and DaalaalHowever, their camaraderie wasn’t always smooth, as Kapoor recently recounted an incident of ragging during their Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) days in Pune, where Mithun was his senior.

In an interview with DD Urdu, Kapoor shared the story of his first day at FTII. “I had arrived at the hostel with a beer in my hand, feeling like a star,” he recalled. There, he met Mithun Chakraborty for the first time. “He was standing at the gate in a dhoti, with a muscular build and holes in his attire. I offered him beer, and he refused, saying it wasn’t allowed in the institute. That’s when I found out he was a senior,” Kapoor narrated.
A Ragging Incident That Left Kapoor in Tears
Things quickly turned tense when Mithun dragged Kapoor by the leg into a room. “He threw me on the floor and questioned, ‘How dare you offer a senior beer?’” Kapoor said. What followed was a humorous yet harrowing ordeal. Mithun and his friends teased Kapoor about his hair, saying, “Tere zulf jo hai, raat ka andhera, tu jo sir mudwae savera ho jae.” They then took out scissors and shaved his head.
Shakti Kapoor admitted feeling regretful and humiliated. “I was looking like a monkey and started crying,” he revealed. The ragging didn’t stop there. Kapoor was asked to swim 40 laps on the cold night, further testing his resilience. “I touched their feet and begged them to let me go home to Delhi,” Kapoor added.
The ragging eventually ended with Mithun Chakraborty stepping in to explain the importance of respecting seniors. Kapoor shared, “Mithun finally told me to remember how to behave with seniors. It was a tough lesson, but one that stayed with me.”
