Thailand’s landmark gay marriage equality law came into force on Thursday. With this, Thailand has become the first country in South-East Asia and the third country in Asia after Taiwan and Nepal to legalize the marriage of same-sex couples.
Now any LGBTQ couple over the age of 18, whether Thai or from any other country, can get married in Thailand.
Now in Thailand, homosexuals will also get all the legal rights that heterosexuals get. This includes engagement, marriage registration, divorce, use of your spouse’s last name, joint management of property, tax benefits, social security, health care, adoption and inheritance.
Apart from Thailand, there are about three dozen countries in the world which have recognized gay marriage. Countries like Australia, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Denmark, France, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Mexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Portugal, South Africa, America, Britain have legalized gay marriage.
But there are some countries in the world where gay marriage or homosexual relations are considered a crime and in many cases death penalty is given for this ‘crime’. Most of these are Islamic countries where Sharia law is applicable.
