New Delhi: The Ministry of Health has directed the Indian Premier League (IPL) to ban all types of tobacco and alcohol promotion, including ‘surrogate’ advertisements, during the tournament starting on March 22. In a letter to IPL President Arun Dhumal, Director General of Health Services Atul Goel said that cricketers are ideal for the youth of India. They should not be directly or indirectly associated with any type of tobacco or alcohol advertisement. Goyal wrote, ‘IPL should strictly implement the rules that ban all types of advertisements related to tobacco and alcohol, including surrogate advertisements. Such advertisements should not be shown inside the stadium and during the broadcast on national television. During the competition and sports facilities, tobacco and liquor products should not be sold. ‘ The letter stated, “Discourage players (including commentators) who directly or indirectly support products related to alcohol or tobacco.”
IPL may lose crores
During the IPL, most Indian cricket lovers enjoy it on television and hence the tournament becomes a favorite of advertisers. Goyal said that it is the moral obligation of cricketers to promote public health. He said, ‘Cricketers are role models for youth to promote healthy and active lifestyle, while IPL is the biggest sports platform in the country. It is social and moral obligation to promote public health and support the government’s health initiative.
Explain that the Indian Premier League earns a hefty from the government whose advertisement is being banned. In such a situation, this decision of the government will cause the BCCI and IPL board to lose crores.
