Muhsin Hendricks, called the world’s first declared gay Imam, was shot dead in South Africa. Police said that the Imam was in a car with a man in Gakebarha, South Africa, when a vehicle came in front of them and blocked the way to get out and opened fire on the car.
Eastern Cape Force said in a statement, “2 suspects from the car came out of the vehicle by covering the face and started firing on the Imam’s car.”
The Guardian According to the report of, Hendrix built a mosque as a safe place for homosexual and other marginalized Muslims. During the firing, the driver noticed that Hendrix sitting behind the vehicle was shot. Police said that after the incident, the accused fled from the spot.
Police said, “The purpose of the murder is not yet known, the investigation of the case is going on.”
The International Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans and International Association have condemned the murder. Executive Director Julia Ehrt said in a statement, “The ILGA World Family is deeply shocked by the murder of Muhasin Hendrix and calls for an investigation to the authorities to investigate that we are afraid that it may be a hatred crime.”
Who were the Muhasin Hendrix?
Hendrix was one of the advocate groups for LGBTQ+. He appeared as a gay in 1996, two years later he started holding meetings for LGBTQ+ Muslims in his hometown, who considered him as the Imam of his community.
In 2011, Hendrix strengthened his role as an Imam by creating a mosque after a friend tolerating the local sermon that condemns homosexuality. He operated the Al-Ghurbah Mosque in Venberg near his birthplace Cape Town. According to its website, the mosque provides a safe place, where gay Muslim and marginalized women can follow Islam. A documentary film The Radical was made in 2022 on Hendrix.

Hendrix had worked as Arabic -language teacher and fashion designer. He revealed his identity to his mother at the age of 29. Born in a Muslim family, Hendrix married a woman, born children, then divorced before revealing his homosexuality to his family, eight years after his father’s death.
According to police data, South Africa has the highest murder rate in the world, where there have been 28 thousand murders till February 2024.
