In recent times, as the cases of cyber crime have increased in the country, at the same pace something like ‘digital arrest’ has also come to the fore. In a way, it is like controlling someone mentally and people who fall into its trap with one phone call call it terrible and even lose lakhs of rupees. One such case has come from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.
Here a case of fraud by cyber thugs has come to light by digitally arresting a student. Here, cyber thugs not only kept a student under digital arrest for four days after accusing him of money laundering but also collected Rs 2 lakh from him.
The victim student is a resident of Triveni Nagar-3 of Aliganj. The thugs called the student and introduced themselves as Delhi Crime Branch and Mumbai CBI officers. He also said that a case of money laundering has been registered against him and he will have to deposit the money immediately.
The thugs threatened to keep the student under digital arrest and also got him to transfer two lakh rupees in the name of ending the case. The student has lodged a complaint with the police and the matter is being investigated. Police have advised students to beware of cyber fraudsters.
It is noteworthy that many cases of digital arrest have come to light this year. Recently, in Sonbhadra, Uttar Pradesh, cyber criminals arrested a woman digitally for 48 hours and defrauded her of Rs 2.9 lakh.
Additional SP Kalu Singh said that Srishti Mishra, a resident of Sonbhadra, informed the police on October 18 that she had received a call from an unknown number on October 9. He was asked to press 9 on the keypad, after which his call was transferred. Then he was told that a person had been arrested for committing a fraud of Rs 38 lakh using his phone number. Then the caller told them that 10 percent of the defrauded amount has been transferred to their account. The woman was told that she was under ‘digital arrest’ while the investigation continued. During this time, Rs 2.5 lakh was looted from him.
