The Taliban has banned nursing and midwifery studies for Afghan women. After this decision, women’s access to the medical field has completely ended. After this decision of Taliban, a video is going viral on social media in which medical students are seen crying and consoling each other.
Taliban issued instructions
The order issued by the Taliban’s supreme leader was shared at a meeting between health officials and directors of educational institutions in Kabul. Although no official statement or letter has been issued regarding this, an official told AFP that ‘Directors have been informed that now women and girls cannot study in these fields.’
However, this is not the first case of ban on women under Taliban rule. After returning to power in August 2021, the period of restrictions on women has continued continuously.
restrictions on education
In March 2022, girls of class 6 and above were barred from going to school. At the end of the same year, women were banned from enrolling in universities, completely closing the path to higher education. In this ban, subjects like engineering, journalism and even medicine were also banned. It was said that these areas were “inappropriate for women”.
employment restrictions
Afghan women have now been excluded even from working life. Women have been prevented from working in government offices and many private sector jobs.
restrictions in public life
Taliban restrictions have extended to public life. Women have been prevented from going to parks, gyms and even public bathrooms.

Cricketer Rashid Khan expressed concern
Afghan cricket star Rashid Khan has also expressed his disappointment over this decision of Taliban, calling it a big blow to the future of Afghan women. She wrote on Facebook that education is important in Islamic teachings and the closure of educational and medical institutions for women is a huge loss for Afghanistan. He said that this decision will have a big impact on the country which is already facing shortage of medical and paramedical staff in Afghanistan.
international criticism
These actions of the Taliban have been widely condemned by the international community. Human rights organizations have repeatedly appealed for intervention to protect the rights of Afghan women. However, the Taliban is unaffected by global criticism and continues to implement policies that exclude women from education, employment and public life.
