In such a situation, let us know what is the work of Interpol and how the work of Interpol is done from India. Also know who are those officers who work for Interpol in India…

What is Interpol?

The full name of Interpol is International Criminal Police Organization. It has 196 member countries. It provides a safe place to the police of all the member countries, where information is exchanged and due to this the police of all the countries work together. Interpol shares data related to crimes and criminals with the police. It was formed in the year 1923 and its headquarters is in Lyon, France. It is the second largest organization in the world after the United Nations. India is its member since 1949.

How does Interpol work?

Every country has a National Central Bureau (NCB) for Interpol, which is the center point for information. NCB is run by the police officers of every country. If we talk about India, CBI works as National Central Bureau (NCB-New Delhi) for Interpol in India. It helps in international cooperation in criminal cases by collaborating with various agencies across the country including law enforcement agencies. This coordination is done through some special officers.

Who are these officers?

The work of coordinating with all the agencies and police etc. is done by some officers, who are called INTERPOL Liaison Officers (ILO). These ILOs do coordination work at the level of Centre, State and Union Territories. These officers are attached to Unit Officers (UOs) at the level of SP, Commissioner and branch heads in their respective organizations. After receiving information from there, they coordinate with the police of other countries through Interpol and exchange information.

Let us tell you that there are INTERPOL Liaison Officers in every state and in some states two officers are appointed. In this an officer is called Deputy ILO. The charge of these posts is given to police officers of the level of IG, Additional CP, SP, Additional DGP. You can get information about ILO of your state through CBI website.

What will be the work of Bharatpol?

If we talk about the work of Bharatpol starting from today, it will make the exchange of information with Interpol easier. Currently, communication between CBI, ILOs, and UOs is through letters, emails, and faxes. Now CBI has developed BHARATPOL portal, which is available on the official website of CBI. Through this, all ILO, UO and CBI officers will be connected to one portal and communication will be done through it.

This portal will streamline the processing of all requests for international assistance through INTERPOL, including the issuance of Red Notices and other colour-coded INTERPOL notices.
