On Friday, January 17, the US Supreme Court gave its verdict upholding the ban on short video app TikTok. Due to this restriction the app can be closed in just two days. This will affect millions of users who depend on this platform for entertainment, e-commerce and advertising.
The court has ordered TikTok’s parent company ByteDance to sell the short video app to a non-Chinese buyer or shut it down in the US on January 19. On Friday, nine judges delivered a unanimous verdict, joining the majority of the US Congress and the US Justice Department in holding that the popular social media app poses a ‘threat to US national security’.
‘Espionage and propaganda spreading machine’
This means that TikTok, which is used by 170 million people in the US, will no longer be available for download on the App Store from Sunday, January 19. However, it is not yet clear how long the potential ban will remain in place, as President-elect Donald Trump, who will take office on Monday (January 20), has said he will address the issue to keep the app running in the US. Will try to find a political solution.
Lawmakers allege that this app is ‘a machine for espionage and spreading propaganda’, which is used by about 17 crore American users every day for entertainment, e-commerce and publicity. However, TikTok has repeatedly denied these allegations.
TikTok is banned in India
Let us tell you that due to security reasons, this app was banned in India long ago. YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels have benefited the most from TikTok’s ban in India. Although, many other platforms also came into existence at that time, but none could remain in the race for long.
