Great Malayalam writer and film director MT Vasudevan Nair passed away on Wednesday night. He was 91 years old. He died around 10 pm during treatment at a private hospital in Kozhikode. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 2005. He also won 7 National Film Awards. Apart from literature, MT, who made his mark in the film industry as a screenwriter and director, also worked as a teacher and editor. Kerala government has announced two days of mourning.
Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan expressed condolences on Nair’s death. He said, “With the demise of M.T. Vasudevan Nair, we have lost a stalwart of Malayalam literature who took our language to global heights. As a true cultural icon, he brought glory to Kerala through his timeless works. His steadfast commitment to secularism and humanity has left a legacy that will inspire generations. Heartfelt condolences to his family and cultural community.”
CM canceled all government programs
A statement was issued by the Chief Minister’s Office. It said that the state government has appointed Malayalam writer M.T. Official mourning will be observed on 26 and 27 December to pay respect and condole the demise of Vasudevan Nair. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has directed that all government programs including the cabinet meeting to be held on December 26 should be postponed.
Many novels written in Malayalam
Let us tell you that Nair expressed the beauty and complexity of Kerala life through his writings. He emerged on the horizon of the world while remaining rooted in the culture of rural life of Valluvanadan. Thus, through his writings MT marked the individual minds of the Malayalees as well as the entire community psyche of Kerala. His novels including Nalukettu and Randamoozham are classics of Malayalam. His screenplays and film adaptations have received national and international attention and won awards.
Honored with many awards
Through his writings for more than seven decades, MT created a literary world that was accessible to both the common man and the intellectuals. Therefore, he was honored with everything from India’s highest literary award, the Jnanpith, to the country’s highest honour, the Padma Bhushan. Along with this, he has also been the editor of Mathrubhumi Prakashan and also served as the President of Kerala Sahitya Akademi, distinguished member of Kendra Sahitya Akademi and President of Thunchan Memorial Trust.
