In West Bengal, justice was given in a case of rape and murder in just 61 days. The Baruipur court of West Bengal has awarded death sentence to the arrested youth who was found guilty yesterday in the case of rape and murder of a minor girl last October.

Baruipur POCSO court had convicted 19-year-old Mustakin Sardar in the case of rape and murder of a 9-year-old minor girl that took place in Jaynagar in South 24 Parganas district on October 4.

Accused arrested in just two and a half hours

After receiving a missing complaint from the victim girl’s family, West Bengal Police started investigation and arrested the accused in just two and a half hours. Baruipur police set an example by completing the investigation in just 25 days. The complete charge sheet was filed in the POCSO court on 30 October.

Testimony of 36 witnesses

After the charge sheet, the hearing of this case started on 4th November in Baruipur POCSO Court and the hearing was completed on 26th November. A total of 36 witnesses testified in the court during the hearing. State Counsel Biwas Chatterjee, on behalf of the State Investigation Agency, presented all the scientific and physical evidence to prove the crime against the arrested accused.

Finally, the accused Mustakin Sardar was convicted by the court on Thursday and Friday was fixed for the sentencing. Judge Subrata Chatterjee sentenced him to death.

The girl went missing on October 4

There was a stir in the whole of Bengal after this case of rape and murder of a 9 year old minor girl came to light amid the ongoing agitation regarding the RG Kar rape and murder case. The nine-year-old student had gone missing while going home from the coaching center in Jaynagar on the evening of October 4.

His family had lodged a missing complaint at Jaynagar police station. The FIR was registered at around 12:30 am on October 5. After starting the investigation, the police received clues about the suspect from local sources and an eyewitness. The accused was identified from a CCTV footage and the police caught him at around 2:45 am.

Court continued till 9 o’clock

During interrogation, the detained accused confessed to his crime and took the police to the place where he had dumped the victim’s body. Based on the recorded statement, the body of the 9-year-old victim was recovered that night.

The victim’s family was demanding the hanging of the culprit from the beginning. Sometimes the court continued till 9 pm to complete the trial on time. Every stakeholder in this case was very active to ensure justice.
