When Dharmendra met Dilip Kumar

In Autobiography ‘Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow’, Dharmendra says, ‘In 1952 I came to Mumbai for some time. During that time I was studying in Ludhiana. I do not know but for some reason I started feeling that I and Dilip Kumar’s brother. I stood outside his house one day and my luck was that the next day I went inside his house.

‘I was standing outside the main gate of his house. Nobody stopped me from going inside. There were wooden stairs in his house which used to go directly towards his room. Nobody stopped me again. I started going up and stood outside any one room there.

‘I saw the man sleeping on my couch with a white, throwing and beautiful. After some time, he realized that an unknown man was looking at him. He woke up shocked and he was none other than Dilip Kumar himself.

‘Dilip Kumar saw me and started screaming’

Dharmendra further told that Dilip Kumar started shouting on seeing him. He was very scared to see this scene. He had a lot of regrets on his actions. The actor told- he stood up and stared at me. He was shocked how an unknown person entered his room and is staring at them like that. On the other hand I was who could not believe my eyes. Dilip Kumar, my idol was standing in front of me. He called his servant. I was scared and ran away from there and kept looking that no one was following me.

‘Going a little distance, when I was confident that I was safe, then I felt that I have done so much careless work by interfering in the personal life of a star. What if there was no watchman or house member at the gate of the house to stop me? ‘

Dharmendra had told in this book that he had met Dilip Kumar by superstar’s sister. He became the winner of a competition in 1958 where his sister also arrived. Where he requested them and then he could meet the superstar in his house. A few years later, Dharmendra took his first step in films with the film ‘Dil Bhi Tera, Hum Bhi Tere’. After which he continued to earn a name on the strength of his skills in films. But during this time he never worked with Dilip Kumar in a film.
