At its heart, Say no…I love you revolved around Rohit, a struggling singer played by Hrithik Roshan, and Sonia, the wealthy and free-spirited character brought to life by Ameesha Patel. Their love story takes a tragic turn, but hope emerges when Sonia meets Raj, a lookalike of Rohit, leading to a thrilling exploration of identity, fate, and justice. Hrithik’s dual performance, one tender and romantic and the other intense and vengeful, showcased his incredible range as an actor, winning over critics and audiences alike. Ameesha Patel, with her grace and poise, complemented Hrithik, making their chemistry one of the highlights of the film.

However, the path to glory wasn’t entirely smooth for this cinematic gem. The Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) had its share of objections, which sparked light-hearted controversies at the time. One such instance was a scene where Ameesha Patel’s character exclaimed “Oh shit!” not once but twice. The CBFC considered the repetition inappropriate and demanded a cut. Rakesh Roshan, ever the pragmatic filmmaker, agreed to remove one of the utterances. This episode humorously underscored the CBFC’s implied stance: saying “shit” once was permissible, but saying it twice crossed the line.

Another hiccup arose with a champagne scene, which the CBFC deemed “unholy.” Originally, the sequence depicted the lead characters drinking from champagne glasses, but the CBFC required a tweak. The scene was modified to show Hrithik and Ameesha merely touching their lips to the champagne bottle instead of actually drinking, a compromise that satisfied the censors and ensured the film’s release.

Despite these minor hurdles, Say no…I love you emerged as a monumental success. The soulful music, composed by Rajesh Roshan, with unforgettable tracks like “No Tum Jano Na Hum” and “One Pal’s Life,” added to the film’s appeal. Hrithik Roshan’s extraordinary dancing skills in “One Pal’s Life” became a nationwide sensation, setting a benchmark for Bollywood choreography.

The film swept awards ceremonies, creating history by winning an unprecedented number of Filmfare Awards. Beyond the accolades, Say no…I love you remains cherished for introducing the world to Hrithik Roshan, whose charisma, acting prowess, and dancing ability heralded a new era in Bollywood.

Looking back, these controversies feel like charming anecdotes in the journey of a film that defined an entire generation. Say no…I love you wasn’t just a debut; it was the birth of a phenomenon that continues to inspire and enthrall audiences even today.
