“Why is society scared of a happy girl?”: Bhumi Pednekar asks as she talks about hustling, privilege, and breaking stereotypes at Davos 2025
During the discussion, Bhumi shared profound insights into her journey, addressing societal norms, the challenges women face, and the importance of embracing privilege responsibly.
Breaking Stereotypes and Embracing Vision
Bhumi spoke candidly about societal conditioning and the struggles women face in asserting themselves. “We are conditioned to not celebrate our vision. You are conditioned to not have dreams and desires, and if you do, you are called opinionated. I have been told this so many times in a room full of people,” she said, shedding. light on the barriers women often encounter.
She emphasized the importance of self-confidence and perseverance, stating, “I am a hustler. Hustle. It’s okay. You have to hustle your way up. If you find an opportunity that’s probably a couple of degrees away from the path you want, grab it because that will eventually take you to that path.”
Acknowledging Privilege and Seeking Allies
Bhumi acknowledged the privilege she grew up with, including access to education and an environment that never belittled her for being a girl. “I come from a lot of privilege. The privilege of education. The fact that I was never told that you are a girl so you are any lesser; that’s a privilege that a lot of people might not have. So, it might be tough. , but I really hope that you find an ally that holds your hand through this journey,” she said, underscoring the importance of allyship in overcoming systemic challenges.
Confronting Societal Norms
Touching on societal perceptions, Bhumi reflected on how women are often boxed into stereotypes. “I feel women in general are boxed, right? You’re only supposed to be this person. And if you want to transition into being something else, it scares people,” she said.
She also highlighted society’s discomfort with women’s happiness and independence. “I’ve often noticed that why is society scared of a happy girl? They are so petrified of somebody who’s on a path of just, you know, being happy. It is because they know she’s going to do something disruptive. She’s going to break every shackle and every tag and every boundary that you’ve created around her,” she added.
Inspiring Change Through Film and Activism
Drawing from her personal experiences and the roles she has portrayed in films, Bhumi pointed out how her cinematic journey has often mirrored her advocacy for breaking boundaries. “And I’ve gone through this experience many times and mostly because of the films that I’ve been a part of,” she noted.
