All 28 laborers trapped under the debris due to the collapse of the building under construction at Kannauj Railway Station were rescued safely after 16 hours of hard work. Officials said that in this case an FIR has been registered against the contractor and an engineer on charges of negligence and putting life at risk.

Officials said that there was no loss of life or property in the accident. 26 laborers have been admitted to various hospitals in Kannauj, while two seriously injured laborers have been shifted to Lal Lajpat Rai (LLR) Hospital in Kanpur. Hospital sources said that both the workers are now out of danger. Meanwhile, Kannauj District Magistrate Shubhrant Kumar Shukla visited the spot and expressed relief on the success of the rescue operation.

Information about incident and FIR

Sections 146 and 153 of the Railway Act, and sections 125 (act endangering the life or personal safety of others), 289 ( Negligent conduct in relation to machinery) and 290 (Demolishing, repairing or erecting any building without safeguarding against probable danger to human life) FIR was registered under IPC.

According to the complaint, the accident occurred when the concrete slab was being poured for the roof of the waiting room. Suddenly the shuttering fell down and the workers were buried under the debris. The report alleges ignoring construction standards and violation of safety protocols.

Investigation and future action

North Eastern Railway (NER) has constituted a three-member committee, comprising the Chief Engineer (Planning and Design), Additional Divisional Railway Manager (Izzatnagar) and Chief Safety Commissioner of Railway Protection Force, to investigate the incident. Railway administration said that strict action will be taken against the culprits regarding this incident. To prevent such incidents in future, monitoring of construction processes and safety standards will be made more stringent.

CCTV footage present at the spot showed that a worker was trying to fix the shuttering when the roof collapsed. The footage showed that the beam carried by the worker hit the shuttering, causing it to slip and fall.

Announcement of compensation for the injured

This construction work was being done under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) to improve the infrastructure of Kannauj Railway Station. NER officials have announced compensation for the injured workers. Minorly injured laborers will be given assistance up to Rs 50 thousand and seriously injured laborers will be given assistance up to Rs 2.5 lakh.
