A major accident occurred when a part of an under construction building collapsed at Kannauj railway station. About two dozen workers were buried under the debris after the building collapsed. In this incident, 23 people have been pulled out from the debris. All the injured were taken to the hospital. North Eastern Railway (NER) has constituted a three-member committee to investigate this incident. Railways has announced compensation for those injured in the accident. An assistance amount of Rs 2.5 lakh has been announced for the seriously injured and Rs 50 thousand for the minor injured. 9 people have been seriously injured in this accident.

Laborer Mahesh Kumar, who was present there at the time of the incident, said that as soon as concrete was poured on the shuttering, it suddenly collapsed. I was standing on the shore, so I was saved.

‘Accident occurred due to falling of roof shuttering’

According to PTI, District Officer Shubhrant Kumar Shukla said that according to preliminary information, the accident occurred due to the fall of the shuttering of the roof. At the same time, Railways sent equipment for rescue after the accident. So far 23 people have been injured in the accident, out of which 14 have suffered minor injuries, while the condition of 9 is critical. All the injured are undergoing treatment in the hospital.

CM Yogi gave instructions

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the officials to safely rescue the people trapped under the debris. After the accident, NDRF and SDRF teams remained engaged in relief work on the spot.

Incident investigation and compensation announcement

Chief Public Relations Officer of North Eastern Railway, Pankaj Kumar Singh said that orders have been given to investigate the incident. The inquiry committee will include the Chief Engineer (Planning and Design), Additional Divisional Railway Manager of Izzatnagar and Chief Security Commissioner of Railway Protection Force. Appropriate arrangements have been made for the treatment of the injured. Minor injured workers will be given compensation of Rs 50,000 and seriously injured workers will be given compensation of Rs 2.5 lakh.

Opposition reaction

Expressing grief over this incident, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav wrote on X that he wishes speedy recovery of all the injured.

What did the Railway Minister say?

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnav said that an investigation has been started into the collapse of an under-construction building at Kannauj station, in which at least 23 people have been injured. Vaishnav said that a very tragic incident has happened, and immediate action has been taken, there was also an investigation committee formed. Let us tell you that this accident happened during the construction of the new terminal of Kannauj railway station, which was being built under the Atal Mission for Rejuvenation and Urban Transformation (AMRUT) scheme.
